Silky Bigboys Demystified
If you’ve ever gotten your saw stuck cutting, or you’ve had a tree or branch you’re cutting spring back, the wood you were curing was under compression and tension. Wood under compression and tension requires extra care when you’re cutting to keep your saw free and to keep you safe.
Bigboys are one of Silky’s most popular families of saws. Browse the products offered here on SilkySaws.com and you’ll see five Bigboy saws with various lengths, teeth sizes, and handles. Here’s how they’re different and how they’re the same. And here’s how to choose the right one for you!
Tooth Size
Tooth size impacts cutting efficiency. It also determines how clean the cut is. Larger teeth Bigboys cut faster than the same saw with smaller teeth. But the larger teeth leave a slightly rougher edge. That’s a non-issue if you’re doing trail work, but less desirable if you’re woodworking. Sure, even a “rougher” cut made with a large-tooth Silky is smooth compared to the same cut with another saw. But a fine-tooth blade makes the smoothest finish cut. The finer the teeth, the cleaner the cut.
Cutting Speed
Cutting with large teeth is about 5% slower than with XL teeth. Medium teeth are 10% or so slower than XL teeth. Cutting with fine teeth is about 15% slower than cutting with XL teeth. That means it will take about 15% more strokes to cut with a fine-tooth saw versus an XL tooth saw.
Curved Vs. Straight Blades
Every Silky cuts on the “pull” stroke. If you press down harder on the blade when you’re cutting the saw will cut faster. Curved blades, like on the Bigboy 2000, naturally dive into the wood fibers faster. That results in a faster cut versus a straight blade saw. So, all other things being equal, a curved blade will cut faster than a straight blade. If you want to cut as fast as possible with the fewest strokes possible, choose a curved blade.
Which One Works Best For You?
The Bigboy Outback is made for the outdoor enthusiast. It comes with a tan/neutral handle and a black blade. The Outback blends in when you’re in the woods, on a hike, or a hunt. The Bigboy Outback’s curved blade and XL teeth will cut freshly fallen trees the fastest, thanks to best-in-class contact with the trunk or branch and aggressive cutting power. The Outback’s low-slip composite wood/rubber handle is also easier to hold onto if you’re processing an animal or using it in the rain.
The yellow-handle 360mm Bigboy 2000 has the same aggressive cutting performance as the Outback but with a hi-vis yellow rubber handle. Set the Bigboy Outback down in dry leaves, and it can be difficult to find. The Bright Yellow Bigboy 2000 handle is much easier to spot.
The Bigboy 360 Fine Teeth has a straight blade ideal for cutting dry, dead wood or smaller wood. The fine-tooth Bigboy is the best choice for woodworking or construction. Silky also sells medium and large teeth straight blade Bigboys. They hit a happy medium between the fine- and extra large-teeth saws.
