History Channel’s Alone Season 10 kicks off Thursday, June 8 at 9 PM Eastern time, and it’s the toughest season in the show’s history. In season 10, ten survivalists compete to survive as long as they can in Northern Saskatchewan. Each competitor is allowed 10 tools of their choice to help them secure shelter, find food and water, and protect themselves. The winner takes home $500,000.
Jodi Rose, a Wyoming-based mom of five who learned the art of bushcraft as a child from her homesteading parents, knew that having the right tools meant winning or losing, surviving or not. So, she brought a Silky Katanaboy.
The big daddy of saws, Rose chose it because when it came to building a shelter, she knew that the Katanaboy would make quick work of cutting down trees.
“A lot of people said I was crazy choosing that saw,” said Rose. “But I knew it was the right tool for me. I was able to cut four- to ten-inch logs for my shelter. I wanted a protected place to live, not a shelter made of sticks. I used it to cut firewood–big logs that would burn through the night. I couldn’t have asked for a better tool.”
Rose also planned to use the saw for processing animals, though she didn’t have the opportunity to hunt larger game during her time in Saskatchewan. She also planned to use the saw to make furniture, though ultimately, “I didn’t build anything amazing out there,” says Rose.
“I used the saw so much on the show,” said Rose. “Then, I used it all winter long to stay in shape once I got home. I still haven’t had to sharpen it. Silkys hold their edge for a long time.”
Rose says that one of the most important things when it comes to survival in the wilderness, not just for a T.V. show but in life, is being comfortable and not stressed out, setting yourself up to thrive not just to survive. Looking back on Season 10, she says she’d always bring the same tools she chose for Season 10 to survive in the wilderness, no matter the location. She chose the Katanaboy for its extreme ability, durability, and because it folds. “I chose the Katanaboy and the other tools I brought with the thought in mind that they would help me thrive and live indefinitely in the woods of Northern Saskatchewan. I was making a home. My tools were an extension of me. I couldn’t have done anything I did out there without them.”
